Hormone-Protective Sterilization Options at Marina Village Veterinary

Understanding Hormone-Protective Sterilization: Traditional spay/neuter surgeries remove the hormone-producing gonads (ovaries/testes) of pets, but recent research has shown that these hormones play a significant role in your pet’s overall health. At Marina Village Veterinary, we stay current with medical advancements to offer you choices that prioritize your pet’s long-term well-being. Below, you’ll find information on alternatives to traditional spay/neuter surgeries that preserve your pet’s hormones while preventing pregnancy.

Ovary Sparing Spay (OSS)

  • Procedure: Removal of the uterus and part of the cervix while leaving at least one ovary intact.
  • Benefits:
    • Maintains hormone production.
    • Your dog will still experience heat cycles and may have minimal bloody discharge but will not be fertile.
    • Reduced risks of various cancers (e.g., hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma).
    • Lower chances of obesity, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, autoimmune thyroiditis, and orthopedic issues.
    • Evidence suggests a longer lifespan in females left intact past puberty.
    • Behavioral benefits include less aggression, decreased cognitive dysfunction, and reduced fearfulness.

Vasectomy

  • Procedure: Removal of part of the vas deferens, preventing fertility while leaving the testicles intact.
  • Benefits: Maintains hormone production.
    • Your dog will not be fertile but may still impregnate a female up to 2 months post-procedure.
    • Reduced risks of various cancers (e.g., hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma, prostate cancer).
    • Lower incidence of obesity, autoimmune thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, and orthopedic issues.
    • Behavioral benefits include decreased cognitive dysfunction, reduced fearfulness, and less undesirable sexual behavior.

Why Choose Hormone-Protective Sterilization?

Hormones produced by the ovaries and testicles contribute significantly to your pet’s health, from regulating growth to protecting against certain diseases. By preserving these organs, you help maintain your pet’s natural hormone balance, leading to better long-term health and potentially extending their lifespan.

We love this vet. Every time we went we were treated very warmly and there was a lot of love for our two dogs while we visited. We felt in good hands with the staff here. Highly recommend as a primary care provider for your pets.

These are exceptional people! I cannot say enough good things about this vet and everyone working there. They are kind, loving, compassionate, and the very best at what they do, we have never let our Beloved Pugs go in the back of any vet except this one. I fully and completely trust every one of the staff members.

I was in search of a veterinary for a bandage change for my fur baby being a bit hesitant about going anywhere else but where he was previously checked at when his incident happened. Went on google and Marina Village Veterinary came up as my first choice, gave them a call and the receptionist was really informative about being seen at their office. I went ahead and filled out a form on their online website, that same day I was called back from the office and was giving an appointment the following day as well as instructions as to how their appointments work, etc. As I came into the office I was greeted and got checked in quickly. Not to mention that both receptionist in the front desk were very nice and helpful; they even offered me something to drink. Hours later since I dropped off my fur baby, Dr. Ashley gave me a call being really explanatory, patient, caring, very helpful and informative about my fur babys situation and what are the following steps for his on going recovery. I am very delighted and appreciative with the service I have been provided since the first time I gave this place a call. 100% recommended, Thank you so much Marina Village Veterinary!🤍😊
